Microsoft Certs Retiring in 2026: Pick the Replacement

Map your expiring Microsoft credential to the replacement that matches your target role, then set a study deadline before the exam window closes.

Your Microsoft certification has a retirement date in 2026, and the replacement may not match the job you want. A 2025 LinkedIn report found that 92% of hiring managers prioritize AI skills during candidate screening. Microsoft plans to retire some existing certifications while introducing new ones for AI-driven roles. That makes the renewal decision a role decision, not a habit.

The dates force the choice

The Azure AI Fundamentals credential, exam AI-900, retires on June 30, 2026, and Microsoft lists exam AI-901, the Azure AI Fundamentals credential, as the replacement. The Azure AI Engineer Associate credential, exam AI-102, also retires on June 30, 2026, and Microsoft lists exam AI-103, the Azure AI Apps and Agents Developer Associate credential, as the replacement.

The Azure Developer Associate credential, exam AZ-204, retires on July 31, 2026, and Microsoft lists exam AI-200, the Azure AI Cloud Developer Associate credential, as the replacement. The Azure Security Engineer Associate credential, exam AZ-500, retires on August 31, 2026, and Microsoft lists exam SC-500, the Cloud and AI Security Engineer Associate credential, as the replacement.

The pattern is simple: the old exam stops, and a listed successor takes the slot. The listed successor is the default path, and the role is the test. Your job is to decide whether that successor still proves the skill you need for the role you want.

The replacement is a role filter

Start with the target role, not the exam code: AI apps or agents need proof you can build and ship them; cloud development needs proof you can build workloads with AI in the loop; security needs proof you can protect cloud and AI systems.

The 4-step cert decision tree is the shortest path from an expiring credential to a defensible next step.

  • Find your exam's retirement date.
  • Identify the listed replacement for that exam.
  • Match the replacement to your target role: AI apps and agents, cloud development, or security.
  • Set a study deadline at least 8 weeks before expiry, with buffer for a retake.

Each step removes a different risk. Finding the date stops you from studying for an exam that has already left the schedule. Identifying the replacement stops you from guessing at a successor that may not exist. Matching the role keeps you from collecting a credential that looks current but does not fit the job. Setting a deadline keeps you from discovering the exam window is closed when you are ready.

Use job posts as your evidence. Pull a few recent postings for the role you want and note the verbs and systems they repeat. If the language centers on building AI apps or agents, the replacement should cover building and shipping those systems. For cloud workloads, pipelines, or deployment, look for a replacement that covers cloud development. For identity, data protection, or incident response, look for a replacement that covers security. You are not collecting every AI keyword. You are matching the credential to the work the job post asks for.

Make the replacement earn its place

The hiring data does not make every AI label valuable. It makes the label less useful unless it connects to a role.

Sometimes the right move is to skip the replacement. When the new exam does not match your target role, do not buy it just because the old one is expiring. A mismatched replacement can hurt more than help, because it signals the wrong skill. A credential is a proof point, not a resume. If the old credential remains valid after retirement, you may not need to retake it immediately. Once it expires, the replacement is your path only when it fits the job.

This week, write down your exam code, its retirement date, the listed replacement, and your target role. Mark it as skip when the replacement does not match the role. Otherwise, put that study deadline in your calendar with the retake buffer in place.
