Find your paid AI track and ask this quarter

Your raise depends on whether AI professionalises your role or democratises it; here is how to tell and what to ask.

You have a raise request forming in your head, and AI is the reason you think you deserve it. The average pay premium for AI skills was 62%, up from 57% in 2025. The market has split by role, and that split decides whether your ask lands. A raise ask that ignores it sounds like a general cost-of-living request; one that names it sounds like a business case.

Your role is on one of two tracks

Classify the role before you ask. A role is professionalised when AI raises the value of judgment, trust, diagnosis, negotiation, or complex human interaction. It is democratised when AI removes a routine task and lowers the entry bar. Radiologists and recruiters are professionalised roles; IT service managers and medical secretaries are democratised roles, with the professionalised group showing job-opening growth at double the rate and salary growth 42% faster.

Look at your recent work. Output that depends on interpreting ambiguous information, managing risk, or persuading a client leans professionalised. Work that is mostly routing, scheduling, data entry, or standard reporting leans democratised. The test is whether AI makes the human part more valuable or makes the task easier to hand off.

Write it as a sentence you can say out loud: my role is professionalised because AI makes the human judgment more valuable, or democratised because AI makes the task easier to automate. If you cannot say which, you are not ready to ask.

The sector premium changes the size of the ask

The sector matters as much as the title. Consumer markets show an AI-skills wage premium of 118%, while government and public-sector work shows 16%.

Check the job ads in your sector. Frequent mentions of AI skills make the premium visible; rare mentions mean your ask needs more proof. Do not borrow a premium from a hotter sector; your manager will test whether it applies to your role, your team, and your market.

The note should say: my sector is high-premium, mid-premium, or low-premium, and my ask should reflect that. In a low-premium sector, do not ask for a premium you cannot defend. A mid-premium sector still supports a defensible ask when the role is professionalised.

The right skill is a human outcome

Find the skill that moves you up the track. It is the human outcome the tool makes easier. Roles that call for AI capabilities like prompt engineering and machine learning grew 69%, roughly eight times the 9% rise across all jobs. In 2.4 million US entry-level job ads, the most AI-exposed roles were seven times likelier to require senior-level human-intensive skills; openings for those roles rose 35% from 2019 while other entry-level openings fell 10%.

Choose a skill that changes a human-intensive result. Prompt engineering is useful when it improves client communication, not when it only saves time on a template. Machine learning is useful when it sharpens a decision, not when it only fills a dashboard.

The pair is an AI skill plus a human-intensive result. For example, prompt engineering plus client trust, or machine learning plus clinical judgment. A vague pair makes your ask sound like a trend, not a contribution.

The ask needs a business case

Companies most able to use AI recorded 52% headcount growth and 24% wage growth, compared with 36% headcount growth and 17% wage growth for the least AI-exposed companies. The top 20% of the most AI-exposed companies recorded an average labour productivity increase of 163% versus 2018.

The mistake is asking for a raise because you use AI tools. Say what you are using AI to do, what it changed, and the figure you want. A strong ask names the professionalised skill, the sector premium, and a number that reflects the premium, not your effort.

Use a simple script: name the AI skill, the human outcome it improved, and the measurable change in your work. Then ask for a raise tied to your sector premium. When your manager asks why now, point to the premium and the professionalised skill.

Put the ask in front of your manager this week with the two-track AI wage rule: classify the role, check the sector premium, name the AI skill that makes you more professionalised, and turn that into a specific raise ask.
